Public Safety Cadets

The Sebastian Police Department is proud to participate in the nationwide Public Safety Cadets program. This is a career-oriented mentoring initiative designed for young adults with an interest in public safety professions. This program has successfully served as a pipeline for future first responders, with several of our current police officers and dispatchers beginning their careers as cadets.

The program aims to guide cadets toward employment within the public safety profession by providing comprehensive education and hands-on training delivered by experienced public safety professionals. Emphasizing teamwork, character development, and leadership, the program prepares participants for future success, personally and professionally.

Cadets gain practical experience by working closely with various department personnel, including police officers, dispatchers, and evidence technicians. They also assist the Community Policing Unit at public events such as Movie in the Park and Shop with a Cop, fostering a strong sense of community service and camaraderie.

Eligibility for the program is limited to individuals between the ages of 14 and 21. All applicants must undergo a selection process and maintain a clean background. Once accepted, cadets are expected to uphold high standards, including academic performance, proper uniform appearance, and adherence to departmental policies.

Our cadets are actively engaged in both learning and community service, and the Sebastian Police Department takes great pride in supporting this impactful program. The continued success of the Public Safety Cadets program is made possible through grants, donations, and the generosity of our community. While cadets participate in various fundraising events, community support remains vital in covering the costs of uniforms, training, equipment, and competition participation.
